A new study (which should be taken with a grain of salt because of how much self-reporting was involved—but still, it's something) suggests that language apps like Duolingo work pretty well for their intended purpose (learning the fundamentals of a foreign language) compared to taking a more formal class on the same topic.
Results will vary from person to person and the determination of efficacy here is pretty limited and specific, but it does gesture at the possibility that such apps are more than just interesting pastimes that provide the illusion of competence (which is a common criticism of them by purveyors of more traditional language-focused education options).
